The film is based on the true story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham, UK. Humphreys uncovered the scandal of “home children” in the 1980s. The scheme forcibly relocated poor children from the United Kingdom to Australia and Canada. Deported children were promised oranges and sunshine, but they got hard labor and life in institutions. Many were sent to the Congregation of Christian Brothers where they were repeatedly raped. The film follows Humphreys as she reunites the estranged families, who are situated in Australia and the U.K., and brings worldwide attention to the cause.
